A leading figure in opera, both as a singer on the world's top stages and as a voice for activism and diversity in the industry, Lawrence Brownlee has captivated audiences and critics around the globe. With the premiere of his new song cycle, Rising, Brownlee and pianist Kevin J. Miller will perform texts by Black authors and poets of the Harlem Renaissance, set to music by leading composers such as Shawn Okpebholo, Damien Sneed, and Emory alumnus Joel Thompson, among others.
In addition to the concert on Friday, join us at the Schwartz Center to observe a free master class and conversation with the artists on Thursday, March 16.
- Master Class with Lawrence Brownlee, tenor: March 16, 2:30 – 4 p.m. As part of the 2022–2023 Schwartz Artist-in-Residence Program, Lawrence Brownlee will work with Emory’s Evelyn Sload, High School student Vinny Montague from Atlanta Music Project, and a student from Clayton State University in this vocal master class. Seating for this master class is on the concert hall stage. Free | RSVP Requested to ensure space is available.
- Conversation with Lawrence Brownlee & Joel Thompson: March 16, 5 – 5:45 p.m. Tenor Lawrence Brownlee and Composer Joel Thompson (Emory alumnus 10C, 13G) will discuss their work in the new song cycle, Rising.
